Episode 36 follows the Resolution as she braves the Antarctic Circle again and again, chasing the elusive “Terra Australis Incognita.” Tahitian voyager Maheine endures cold, boredom, and wonder in equal measure, while the crew alternates between Christmas rum and the fear of being trapped by ice. Cook pushes to an unprecedented 71°10′ south, only to be stopped by an unbroken wall of ice.

Along the way, seabirds, whales, and fog form the shifting scenery of a world beyond human habitation. Illness and foul food weaken even the captain, while scurvy begins to spread. Yet by journey’s end, one truth is clear: outside the ice, there is no great continent—only the boundless, indifferent sea.
