In Episode 21 of the Pacific voyage, the HMS Resolution runs aground off the coast of Tahiti, leading to a dramatic rescue—and an unforgettable series of encounters.
On Monday, August 16th, 1773, the calm sea turns treacherous as the Resolution strikes a reef just before entering the harbor. Amid the panic, the crew and local islanders work side by side to refloat the ship. Their teamwork and the surprising absence of wind save the vessel. One of the officers, however, loses more than his nerves—his bedsheets mysteriously vanish, likely stolen by the graceful and determined Maroraï.

Over the next two days, the crews of the Resolution and the Adventure reestablish contact with Tahiti. They anchor in the small harbor of O-Aitepieha on Teiarrabu, the southern peninsula. Dozens of canoes bring fresh fruit, vegetables, native fabrics, and curious items of trade. The Tahitians prove to be skilled swimmers and clever negotiators—sometimes even reselling the same goods twice. Despite the occasional theft, their generosity and hospitality shine through.
While trading and replenishing supplies, the Europeans explore the island’s lush valleys, wild plantations, and sacred sites. They visit a maraï (temple) dedicated to Aheatua, the local king, and are awestruck by the landscape: towering peaks, rich forests, and beautifully cultivated fields. Georg collects tropical plants and observes local birds, from doves and parrots to a striking blue heron and brilliant kingfishers.
But tension mounts again when a Tahitian guest steals from Captain Cook’s table and escapes into the sea. Musket fire and a cannon blast bring the standoff to a dramatic end, leaving the crew with captured canoes and renewed caution.
Throughout the events, the sailors are swept up in Tahiti’s sensual allure, its people’s charm, and nature’s splendor. Yet the voyage reminds them that paradise, too, can test their judgment, their discipline—and their safety.
Join Georg Forster and the crew as they navigate reefs, rituals, and raw temptation on the sun-drenched shores of Tahiti.
