The crew is greeted by dense forests, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of fish, offering a much-needed respite. They waste no time exploring, discovering fearless birds unaccustomed to human presence, and brewing beer using local manuka and rimu leaves—the first beer ever made in New Zealand. But their newfound haven isn’t without peril. Tiny yet vicious sandflies torment them day and night, leaving them itching and feverish.
