S1-E29 Raiatea: Locked in Vanity

As the HMS Resolution explores Raiatea, the crew is invited to a grand ceremonial dance performed by local nobility. Among the dancers are Poyadua, the daughter of Chief Orea, and the enchanting Teinamai, whose elegance leaves a lasting impression on Georg Forster. A dramatic lesson in vanity unfolds the next day when an admired island beauty receives a symbolic punishment, silencing the persistent begging among women.

A local beauty receives a harsh lesson in vanity as a padlock she desired is symbolically clipped to her ear, silencing the women’s begging.

Uncertainty grows when Chief Orea, fearing abduction, flees—only to return after gestures of goodwill restore his trust. At the same time, the mysterious disappearance of the noble youth Porea troubles the crew. His place is soon taken by O-Hedidi, a bold young islander who volunteers to travel to Europe. Visits from neighboring Taha bring new supplies and cultural insights.

Near the bay of Hamane, a poignant funeral lament and lively hiva dance reflect the island’s vibrant traditions. However, the journey ends on a tense note as the theft of a trade bag leads to retaliation: the crew seizes local property until the stolen goods are returned. This marks the end of their uneasy farewell to Raiatea.
